As the state of Missouri continues to grapple with the aftermath of severe flooding, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has stepped up once again to extend a helping hand to those involved in the relief efforts. As of today, they've put through another extension for heavier-than-normal truckloads carrying critical materials for repairs and reconstruction.
This weight waiver, specifically aimed at facilitating the transport of rock, sand, and gravel needed for levee repair and other flood-damage mitigation infrastructure, permits private and for-hire carriers to carry up to 10% more than their licensed weight. According to MoDOT's official announcement, this increase is not to be surpassed, emphasizing that the loaded, gross weight of the vehicle cannot exceed that additional 10% above the vehicle's licensed gross weight. The waiver is slated to remain effective through October 31, giving carriers ample time to contribute to the recovery process.
There are a few strings attached, naturally. Only roads within Missouri's borders are fair game, and the privilege does not extend to the interstate system. Furthermore, participating drivers must respect posted bridge weight limits and notably when crossing these bridges, they must keep their vehicle speed to a mere 30 mph, ensuring safety remains a top priority amidst the hustle of recovery efforts.
MoDOT’s extended waiver is intended to help recovery efforts by allowing essential materials to be transported more quickly and efficiently. During this period, drivers must still follow all rules and limitations, as the waiver is temporary and does not permit ignoring normal roadway regulations.
