In a notice reminiscent of school infection outbreaks past, parents of the Monessen City School District were informed about a surge in cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) at the district's elementary school. According to a letter from the school's superintendent, Dr. Robert Motte, more than five instances of the viral infection, known for fever, mouth sores, and rash, have been confirmed among students.
As the familiar dance of disease prevention starts, custodians are rigorously sanitizing the school facilities. WPXI reported that this includes "disinfecting all areas in the school and frequently touched surfaces." Simultaneously, in a step trying to curb the spread off campus, "buses and transportation vehicles will also be deep-cleaned and disinfected," Dr. Motte said.
Engaging with health authorities and keen on transparency, the district has promised to keep the community in the loop. Eager to fend off further spread, families are being urged to keep a vigilant eye on their children for any presenting symptoms of HFMD. WTAE reported that the district is advising parents to contact their healthcare provider if they notice symptoms and to keep sick children at home.
