Burke County, North Carolina, is under investigation following a fatal incident that claimed two lives. A 51-year-old man, Michael James Moretz, was arrested on two counts of felony murder in connection with the deaths of Michael Curtis Hallyburton, 63, and Joseph Kincaid Byrd Jr., 76.
The victims were found dead after a house fire on Swink Street in Morganton late last month. The Queen City News reported that both men had been shot. Moretz is being held without bond, and his initial court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
Several dogs were also found at the property and taken into care by Burke County Animal Services. WBTV noted that more than 20 agencies, including the Virginia State Police, are involved in the investigation.
WCNC reported that Mortez was taken to the Burke County Magistrate's Office, where he is being held without bond. Authorities are continuing to investigate the motive and circumstances of the shootings and fire.
