The Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating a shooting that resulted in death in Southeast Washington. According to the MPD report, yesterday afternoon, Seventh District officers arrived at the 2600 block of Birney Place after receiving reports of gunfire. At about 3:03 p.m., they found an adult male with a gunshot wound, unconscious and unresponsive. Despite swift transportation to a local hospital by DC Fire and EMS, life signs remained elusive and the victim was ultimately pronounced deceased.

The victim has recently been identified by authorities as 20-year-old Najii Mercer from Oxon Hill, MD. Details leading up to the incident remain scant, with an investigation that is ongoing. The report drawn from the MPD website states officers responded "for the report of sounds of gunshots."
