Nashville's Department of Transportation & Multimodal Infrastructure has announced a new measure aimed at protecting pedestrians and improving traffic flow. The city has introduced Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs) to 108 intersections throughout the downtown area. This initiative allows pedestrians to get a head start when entering crosswalks, effectively making them more visible to vehicular traffic which, in turn, is expected to reduce conflicts and enhance safety for all street users.

In a social media post, the department explained that an LPI gives pedestrians the advantage of being the first to move before vehicles receive a green light. The intention is not only to make them significantly more visible but also to reinforce the right-of-way they are entitled to. "These enhancements are designed to protect pedestrians— and to make Nashville’s streets safer for everyone," the Nashville Department of Transportation & Multimodal Infrastructure articulated.

Beth Ostrowski, a spokesperson for the Nashville Department of Transportation, stressed the benefits that come with the implementation of LPIs. "For pedestrians, LPIs mean enhanced safety and visibility," Ostrowski said. She also mentioned that for drivers, the intervals act as an indicator to yield more consistently and be more attuned to the presence of foot traffic. The move illustrates a continued focus on pedestrian safety and a commitment to reducing traffic-related incidents in the city.
