President Donald Trump announced on TRUTH Social that American flags nationwide will be flown at half-staff in honor of Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed at a Utah Valley University event. The flags will remain at half-staff until on Sunday, according to Click2Houston.
The fatal incident has drawn bipartisan reactions of condolences and condemnation. House Speaker Mike Johnson called the shooting “detestable” and said political violence “has to stop.” Senate Majority Leader John Thune and former Vice President Kamala Harris also spoke out. In a statement to ABC News, Harris said, “Political violence has no place in America. I condemn this act, and we all must work together to ensure this does not lead to more violence.”
Former President Joe Biden, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords condemned the attack, with Giffords noting her own experience as a survivor of similar violence. The suspected shooter is still at large. Donald Trump Jr. said about Kirk, “I love you brother. You gave so many people the courage to speak up and we will not ever be silenced,” as stated by ABC News.
