The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is opening up a channel for public discourse and insight on the Statewide Coordinated Human Services Transportation Plan, with a particular lens on enhancing rural transit in the state. On September 23, from 12:30 to 2 p.m., NDOT will be facilitating a virtual open house, where attendees can tap into the conversation via a Zoom meeting or a call-in option, as reported by the NDOT official website.

At the heart of the initiative is the intent to address the transportation needs of those who often find their mobility options limited—older adults and individuals with disabilities living in rural Nevada. These sectors of the population depend highly on the availability of robust transit services to maintain their engagement with work, healthcare facilities, and basic amenities like grocery stores. "Public feedback will help us prioritize the most needed rural transit access across Nevada," said Laurel Brock-Kline, an NDOT transportation planner, as per a report by the NDOT website.

The drive for such feedback comes on the heels of an annual Federal Transit Administration windfall that NDOT receives, aimed at buttressing the transit requirements of the aforementioned groups in rural locales. Stakeholders, including public, private, and non-profit transportation providers, along with human service agencies and general citizens, are encouraged to participate in the upcoming event to learn more about the plan and voice their perspectives.

Input from this session will be used to create a draft plan, which will then be shared for public comment before final approval. NDOT’s goal is to address transportation challenges, fill service gaps, and plan for a more inclusive future transit system. Those who cannot attend can email comments to [email protected].
