Rollover Crash Shuts Down I-11 Near Boulder City, Life Flight Called In

A single vehicle rolled off southbound Interstate 11 and tumbled down an embankment near Railroad Pass late Monday night, prompting Nevada Highway Patrol to shut down all southbound lanes and call in a Life Flight air ambulance. The crash was reported at 9:32 p.m. near Railroad Pass Casino Road, and one person may need to be airlifted from the scene.

According to FOX5 Las Vegas, Nevada Highway Patrol confirmed the vehicle left the roadway and fell down an embankment, and troopers closed the freeway in both directions of travel near the Railroad Pass interchange to allow Life Flight to land and clear the scene. As of the outlet's initial report, the story remained developing, with the extent of the injured person's condition not yet confirmed.

With southbound I-11 shut down, traffic was being diverted off the freeway and onto Boulder City Parkway, the outlet reported. That stretch of road, also known as U.S. 93 Business, served as the primary route through Boulder City before the I-11 bypass opened and still functions as the main detour whenever the freeway is blocked near Railroad Pass, according to a route history compiled by AARoads.

A Interchange With a History of Serious Crashes

The Railroad Pass interchange, where I-11 meets U.S. 93 and U.S. 95, was built as an $83 million first phase of the freeway project and includes a diamond interchange and a 600-foot flyover bridge, according to project details from the Nevada Department of Transportation. It has seen serious collisions before: in April 2025, a 19-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash with a semi-truck on northbound I-11 at the same Railroad Pass Casino Road location, an incident that shut down all northbound lanes and the U.S. 93 interchange for hours, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported at the time.

Jurisdiction over crashes like Monday's typically falls to Nevada Highway Patrol rather than local police, since the interchange sits outside Boulder City's municipal boundaries. Under state practice outlined by the Drummond Law Firm, state troopers handle major interstate collisions while local departments generally assist with traffic control only when incidents occur within city limits.

Part of a Freeway Built to Bypass Boulder City

The 15-mile I-11 Boulder City Bypass opened in August 2018 as a $600 million project connecting Henderson to the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge, cutting roughly 30 minutes off travel times by routing traffic around downtown Boulder City's traffic signals, according to a project summary from Informed Infrastructure. Monday's closure briefly reversed that convenience, pushing southbound traffic back onto the local surface streets the bypass was designed to relieve.

The rollover adds to a string of severe crashes along the I-11 corridor this year. In July, a fatal big-rig rollover on a northbound I-11 connector ramp at Boulder Highway shut down that ramp for several hours, as Hoodline previously reported. Weeks later, a pedestrian was killed in a late-night crash on I-11 near the Spaghetti Bowl in downtown Las Vegas.

Fatalities Down Overall, But Speed Still a Factor

The crash comes even as traffic deaths across Clark County have fallen sharply this year. Fatalities dropped 32.8% during the first six months of 2026, down to 92 from 137 during the same period in 2025, according to Nevada Office of Traffic Safety data relayed by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Still, speeding remains a leading contributing factor in Nevada crashes, per an August 2026 traffic safety report, following earlier high-visibility enforcement efforts on I-11 where troopers ticketed drivers going more than 100 mph.

Nearby roadwork may also be complicating conditions for drivers navigating the area. The Nevada Department of Transportation began a $41 million pavement preservation project on U.S. 95 south of the I-11 junction in February, imposing single-lane closures and reduced 55 mph speed limits that are expected to continue through late summer. It remains unclear whether construction, mechanical failure, impairment or another factor contributed to Monday's rollover, and how long the southbound lanes stayed closed before fully reopening.
