Lawrence Watkins, a 26-year-old New Orleans man, entered a guilty plea for federal drug and weapons offenses, with a sentencing date set for November 20, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Watkins is facing severe penalties, including up to 20 years in prison for drug trafficking and a mandatory minimum of five years for firearm possession related to the drug offenses.

The case unfolded on June 22, 2023, after a suspicious vehicle led police on a chase in New Orleans' Algiers area, eventually crashing and prompting its occupants to flee. Watkins, among them, was apprehended, and authorities found a micro Draco pistol, ammunition, drugs, paraphernalia, and cash in his backpack. The U.S. Attorney's Office highlighted that Watkins could receive a fine of up to $1,000,000 for the drug charges, and up to $250,000 for the firearm charge, in addition, each count carries a mandatory $100 special assessment fee.

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaboration aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence, encompasses this case. PSN's strategy focuses on community trust, supporting organizations that prevent violence, strategic enforcement priorities, and the measurement of results. Launched in May of 2021, PSN works to make neighborhoods safer through partnerships at all levels of law enforcement and community service.

The FBI New Orleans Gang Task Force and Louisiana State Police worked together in the investigation leading to Watkins's guilty plea. The case prosecution is being managed by Special Assistant United States Attorney James Ollinger, and Assistant United States Attorney Mike Trummel of the Violent Crimes Unit. Watkins' forthcoming sentencing will conclude a part of the federal authorities' efforts to combat intertwined drug and gun-related crimes within the community.
