New York is implementing stricter measures aimed at protecting children online. Attorney General Letitia James has introduced proposed rules under the existing "SAFE for Kids Act," which seeks to regulate social media features that impact users under 18. The new rules focus on limiting algorithmically personalized feeds and late-night notifications without explicit parental consent, according to the Attorney General's office.

"Children and teenagers are struggling with high rates of anxiety and depression because of addictive features on social media platforms," Attorney General James stated in a press release, emphasizing New York’s commitment to reevaluating how young people engage with online platforms. The public has 60 days to provide feedback on the proposed rules, with a deadline set for December 1.

Parents, educators, youth, and industry groups are encouraged to carefully review the proposed regulations and provide their input. Senator Andrew Gounardes highlighted the significance of the act, noting that it was created in response to concerns over the influence of Big Tech. "I passed the SAFE for Kids Act in 2024 for one simple reason: I refuse to raise my children in a world where Big Tech profits at their expense," he told the Attorney General's office.

The details of these rules require attention. Social media companies will be required to implement age verification systems to distinguish adults from minors, with annual testing of these methods. The rules also require companies to provide a clear process for obtaining parental consent, including the option to withdraw consent at any time. Companies that do not comply may face civil penalties of up to $5,000 per violation.

Feedback is an important part of the process. Comments can be submitted to [email protected] to participate in the discussion regarding how digital platforms affect young users.
