A 25-year-old Copiague man was seriously injured early Thursday when the Nissan Frontier he was driving slammed into the back of a stopped box truck on Broadhollow Road in East Farmingdale, sending three people to the hospital. The crash happened around 5:50 a.m. as the southbound pickup approached a red light at the intersection with Michael Avenue.
Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives identified the injured driver as Jose Garcia-Morales and his passenger as 21-year-old Noe Reyes-Ramirez, both of Copiague, according to Long Island Life & Politics. Garcia-Morales suffered serious injuries, while Reyes-Ramirez was hospitalized with injuries described as non-life-threatening, per Daily Voice. The 2012 Nissan Frontier struck the rear of a 2014 Hino box truck that was stationary at the signal, the outlet reported.
The box truck's driver, 48-year-old James Gordon of Rockville Centre, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. All three people involved — Garcia-Morales, Reyes-Ramirez, and Gordon — were taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, a Level I Adult Trauma Center serving Long Island's South Shore, the same report notes.
Trucks and Nissan Both Face Post-Crash Safety Checks
Officers from the Suffolk County Police Department's Motor Carrier Safety Section conducted an immediate safety inspection of the Hino box truck at the scene, while the Nissan Frontier was impounded for a post-crash safety evaluation, according to Patch. The unit is part of the Highway Patrol Bureau and is specifically tasked with roadside inspections of commercial vehicles for mechanical safety and weight compliance. First Squad detectives are continuing to investigate the collision, and no charges have been announced.
Because the box truck was stopped at a red light when it was struck from behind, New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1129(a) creates a legal presumption of negligence against the rear driver, who bears the burden of showing a non-negligent explanation such as mechanical failure or a medical emergency. The statute requires drivers to maintain a reasonable and prudent distance behind other vehicles on the road.
A Dangerous Corner Along a Busy Truck Route
Broadhollow Road, also known as NYS Route 110, is a heavily traveled commercial and industrial corridor at Michael Avenue, carrying substantial truck, commuter, and retail traffic past Republic Airport and nearby shopping plazas, according to the Town of Babylon. The intersection is currently under municipal traffic impact study as part of the East Farmingdale Overlay District plan.
This is not the only recent emergency response at that same intersection. A two-vehicle crash involving a Nissan and a Toyota RAV4 occurred at Broadhollow Road and Michael Avenue on August 20, according to local dispatch logs cited by Citizen. Just weeks earlier, Hoodline reported on a mother shoving her toddler from a truck's path in a separate commercial vehicle crash on Conklin Street in downtown Farmingdale.
Commercial truck inspections across Suffolk County routinely uncover safety compliance issues. Prior joint multi-agency operations have placed up to one-third of inspected commercial vehicles out of service for violations involving brakes, tires, and other regulatory requirements, per Long Island Life & Politics. It remains unclear whether Thursday's inspection of the Hino box truck turned up any such issues, and police have not released findings from either vehicle's safety evaluation.
