Following a thorough legal investigation, the Office of the Special Investigation (OSI) within New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office has released its findings on the February 17, 2024, police shooting of Taiquell Woodson in Bay Shore. The OSI examined body-worn camera footage, witness statements, and other evidence, concluding that prosecutors would likely face challenges in proving that the officers’ actions were unjustified in court.

The incident unfolded in the early hours when SCPD responded to a distress call relating to a domestic dispute. According to the OSI report, when law enforcement reached the location, an officer approached the house and shortly thereafter, was violently confronted by Mr. Woodson who brandished a knife and an expandable baton. During the scuffle, one officer was slashed multiple times, prompting him and another officer to discharge their firearms, fatally striking Mr. Woodson. The AG's office states, "Mr. Woodson came out of the house armed with a knife and an expandable baton and slashed an officer multiple times."

Following the application of New York's justification law, the OSI asserts that the use of deadly force by police in this scenario is considered legally defensible. This law recognizes an officer's right to utilize such force to protect against imminent threats of deadly force. Furthermore, in this specific case, the evidence at hand did not provide a basis to successfully challenge the notion that the officers' actions were warranted.
