Commuters on Interstate 80 east of Sparks can expect overnight disruptions. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has announced lane reductions starting on Sunday through December as part of preliminary work for future road improvements and environmental upkeep.

Lane closures will occur between 8 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. on westbound I-80 and 7:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. on eastbound I-80. As motorists plan their nighttime commutes, they should expect single lane closures up to two miles long. Additionally, although the lane reductions will alternate to reduce inconvenience, delays are anticipated, and extra travel time is advised by NDOT.

During these hours, the agency will conduct geotechnical soil surveys necessary for the widening project and remove litter from the roadside. Lane closures will occur on sections of I-80 between Vista Boulevard and USA Parkway, areas that serve traffic to and from industrial zones.

To minimize disruption, NDOT has scheduled work during nighttime hours when traffic volume is typically lower. However, nearly 50,000 drivers who use this section daily should expect changes to their schedules. As part of the soil survey work, technicians are collecting data on soil and rock compositions that will inform the final plans for the I-80 widening project, which is expected to begin as early as 2027.

According to the NDOT's plans, these forthcoming improvements could cut down crash rates by 20 percent. Besides these long-term motivations, the immediate effort to scoop up roadside litter involves multiple NDOT highway maintenance teams, who besides this work, manage various other road maintenance duties.

NDOT is also using this opportunity to remind drivers about the importance of securing their loads properly. Unrestrained waste can lead to fines and poses a risk to the environment and drivers.
