The No. 22-ranked Utah Volleyball team is gearing up for a challenging week with three matches on the docket, starting with a home court clash against Utah Valley University at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Tuesday. While fans can tune into the action on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. MT, the real test comes later in the week when the Utes face No. 1 Nebraska and Drake in the Husker Invitational. According to UtahUtes.com, the showdown with Nebraska will be broadcast nationally on FS1 on Friday, with Utah wrapping up the Invitational against Drake on Saturday.
Under the leadership of seasoned Head Coach Beth Launiere, who is in her 36th season, the Utah volleyball team is banking on a blend of experienced players and fresh talent. The squad boats nine returning players, all pivotal to last season's NCAA Tournament advance, including three 2025 All-Big 12 selections. However, the team isn't resting on its laurels, having welcomed nine newcomers to bolster this year's lineup. Notably, the program has also added a nine-year-old "Ultimate Ute," Briar Rose, to lift spirits through a presumably grueling season.
Utah's immediate challenge, Utah Valley, comes fresh from a respectable performance in the University of Hawaii OUTRIGGER Invitational and is recognized as the WAC coaches' preseason favorite. Junior Evalyn Chism, tapped as the top setter in the conference, will be a key player to watch. But the Utes' focus will undoubtedly be riveted on Friday's matchup against a flawless Nebraska team, which has so far overpowered its competition, including top-10 teams.
The scouting reports lay out the stakes. Nebraska, with a perfect 6-0 start and a roster featuring four preseason all-conference team members, will not be an easy opponent. The Husker Invitational will be a proving ground for Utah's mixed bag of veterans and newcomers, like Emrie Moea'i, who brings a strong defensive game to the court, and the likes of Leah Wilton-LaBoy, a transfer setting the pace in assists. Freshman phenom Devyn Wiest and international standout Neea-Maria Joki are tipped to elevate the Utes' competitive edge, fresh off their respective summer successes with national teams.
