North Carolina has announced a partnership with the AI Innovation Index, developed by the nonprofit AI for Equity, to track and support AI use in PreK-12 schools. According to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), the program is the first of its kind nationwide.

Participation is optional for school units and includes regular surveys for staff and students, along with a self-assessment for leadership. The goal is to understand how AI is being used in classrooms and identify areas where additional support may be needed.

The NCDPI’s Office of Digital Teaching and Learning provides resources, including an AI guidebook, to help schools integrate AI into teaching and learning. Aaron Cuny, CEO of AI for Equity, said the Innovation Index provides data on how students and educators are using AI, helping districts identify gaps and improve AI integration.
