Residents of North Royalton have been questioning the pervasive smell of natural gas in their environment, particularly around Stoney Creek. The North Royalton Fire Department has acknowledged the odor, pinpointing it to an existing gas leak at 13910 Stoney Creek, as Cleveland19 reported.
In response to concerns from the community, the fire department announced that the remediation work initially scheduled for early 2026 has been brought forward, with efforts expected to conclude in the next three weeks. Despite the leak being judged as non-hazardous, the department notes that the scent may be quite overpowering. This information was further propagated by the department on their Facebook page, reaching out to the residents to keep them informed.
According to FOX8, Columbia Gas, the utility responsible, has been monitoring the situation closely and emphasizes that the safety of the residents is their priority. They continue to urge individuals not to hesitate to report any suspicions of gas leaks to their emergency line at 800-344-4077, especially noting potential risks indoors or near buildings.
While the specific onset date of the leak remains undisclosed, the Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Habak, told News 5 Cleveland, grading the severity of a leak and scheduling subsequent repairs is common practice for a gas company. Columbia Gas reassured the public, stating, "This leak does not pose an increased safety risk to the community," and highlighted the importance of contacting them if the distinctive rotten-egg-like smell of natural gas is detected. The company also reminded that natural gas is naturally colorless and odorless, and the odorant added by them plays a crucial role in detection and safety.
