Tony Herbert, an aide in Mayor Eric Adams’ Community Affairs Unit, was dismissed following social media comments about the shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. According to Gothamist, Herbert referred to the incident as “karma.”
Herbert, identified as a community advocate and associate of Mayor Adams, posted a meme criticizing Charlie Kirk’s remarks about immigrants and minorities. In a now-deleted video, he reiterated his position. Mayor Adams’ office issued a statement disavowing Herbert’s comments and that Adams believes, "Charlie Kirk was a passionate young man, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this trying time," as told to 1010 WINS.
In the Adams administration, Herbert previously served as a Brooklyn borough director and later as a citywide housing liaison. The social media post that resulted in his dismissal was not his first political commentary; he had also written an op-ed supporting Mayor Adams’ re-election and announced his intention to run for the New York Assembly.
Governor Kathy Hochul responded to the incident by stressing the need for unity and political civility, announcing a security briefing and a discussion on ways to reduce tensions and prevent further violence. The Adams administration, in a statement obtained by 1010 WINS, said Herbert’s dismissal was necessary while also expressing regard for Kirk’s family following the shooting.
