As the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) gears up for kick-off on September 22, New York City's security forces are on high alert. With over 200 world leaders descending upon Manhattan, the NYPD is joining forces with federal law enforcement to ramp up security measures. According to ABC7NY, NYPD Chief of Department John Chell stated, "We are always thinking how we can make our apparatus bigger and better," indicating increased drone activity during the event.
The NYPD's elaborate security plans follow a string of violent events targeting political and religious sites. The city, already sensitive in the wake of Kirk's killing, is bracing for potential threats everywhere, as per NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Counterterrorism and Intelligence Rebecca Weiner. "These events tend to be fueling each other," Weiner told ABC7NY. The city will not only see a flock of drones but also a fortified police presence at places of worship, particularly during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
As part of the increased security measures, the NYPD’s bomb squad has been recognized as a key element in maintaining the city’s safety. FOX 5 NY showcased the squad’s capabilities, with Deputy Chief of Counterterrorism James Kehoe emphasizing the challenge of protecting so many international figures. "It's probably the biggest challenge we face all year," Kehoe stated. Their preparations include everything from robots that can disrupt suspicious packages to a heightened security presence complete with heavy weaponry.
One of the bomb squad's key elements is their partnership with the Secret Service. Kehoe expressed the invaluable nature of their teamwork and the unique bond between the explosive detection canine squad and their handlers, "We couldn't get along without them," Kehoe noted. The NYPD has implemented detailed planning and maintains readiness to respond to any necessary adjustments during the event. Law enforcement personnel will be deployed on the water, in the air, and throughout Midtown Manhattan to provide security for both visiting dignitaries and the public during the international gathering, as reported by FOX 5 NY.
