Oklahoma commuters, brace yourselves for a little extra gridlock. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) has announced significant road closures and narrowing that could affect your travel plans starting yesterday night and extending into the foreseeable future. For those traveling along I-35, prepare to reroute as the southbound I-35 on-ramp from Wilshire Blvd. will shut down from 8 p.m. yesterday to 6 a.m. today. Additionally, the southbound off-ramp to westbound I-44 will be narrowed, and southbound I-35 will similarly be squeezed between Wilshire Blvd. and N.E. 50th St.

Set to begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday and last until September 24, eastbound I-40 will have its right lane closed at Air Depot Blvd. According to ODOT, this closure is critical for the installation of new overhead signage and safety devices but will kindly keep ramps open to ease movement. Drivers should anticipate disruptions but can take solace in knowing the pathway is not entirely blocked.

For those accustomed to traveling through Midwest City, you'll need to plan ahead. East and westbound I-40 is narrowed down to two lanes between I-240 and Town Center Dr., a constriction that is projected to persist through the entirety of 2025. Affected motorists should exercise caution as there will be no shoulders available or merge distances, ODOT cautions. For a less congested alternate route, ODOT suggests I-240 and US-62/N. 23rd St.

After a period of closure, Anderson Rd. is now open, though the eastbound I-40 ramps at this location remain off-limits through fall. As a result, southbound traffic from Douglas Blvd. to eastbound I-40 is not an option, and those exiting eastbound I-40 at Douglas Blvd. are precluded from turning north. "Drivers are still encouraged to use the protected turnaround at Town Centre to access the eastbound Industrial Blvd. from westbound I-40," the ODOT release noted. In regards to accessing Hruskocy Gate from Douglas Blvd., it's advised to use the new protected turnaround instead.

Lastly, any journey through Edmond is likely to be slowed. Both Danforth Rd. and Kelly Ave. are reduced to one lane in each direction at their intersection, a situation expected to last through Spring 2026 due to intersection expansion efforts in partnership with the City of Edmond. Patience will be a necessity for residents and visitors alike as Edmond adapts to its new growth.
