The Oregon Department of Emergency Management (OEM) is addressing the deficit of emergency telecommunicators head-on with an innovative statewide 9-1-1 Job Board aimed to effectively connect prospective job seekers with critical roles in Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) across Oregon. As reported by the OEM's latest announcement, the platform emerges as a strategic response to the challenge of staffing these high-pressure positions that are crucial in crisis scenarios.
As mentioned by OEM, facing the reality of an ongoing shortage, the job board intends to proactively promote career opportunities in the region’s 40 PSAPs, many of which report continuous openings. "9-1-1 dispatchers are true first responders," Frank Kutcha said, highlighting the urgency and significance of these positions. They are indeed the first layer of assistance, offering a composed voice and sage guidance through tumultuous events, and coordinating responses to ensure public safety.
In concert with the 9-1-1 community, the OEM's strategy earlier this year culminated in the creation of this centralized job portal. Additionally, an interactive map was developed this spring to aid users in easily navigating employment openings by geographic preference. This tool supplements the job board by allowing individuals to swiftly pinpoint opportunities in their desired locales.
With the launch of this job board, the state of Oregon invites its citizens to heed the call of public service. "Join the effort. Make a difference. Start your career in 9-1-1 today," urges the OEM, extending an appeal for involvement that resonates deeply in the field of public safety. For those ready to shoulder the mantle of a 9-1-1 dispatcher or call taker, the platform stands as a gateway to a dynamic and impactful career.
