Thousands of Sacramento County residents faced unexpected disruptions this morning, as power outages swept through areas from Carmichael to Rancho Cordova, Citrus Heights, and Northern California regions beyond. According to ABC10, more than 9,000 SMUD customers in the Carmichael and Rancho Cordova areas were left without electricity, with initial restoration times initially projected for 11 a.m. but later adjusted to around 2 p.m. for some customers.
The cause of outages remains unconfirmed, though formidable winds were reported in the impacted areas. SMUD spokespersons communicated that their crews were actively assessing the damage. Meanwhile, KCRA informed that SMUD's outage map indicated an even higher number of affected clients, with 11,000 customers—including 8,000 in Carmichael and over 2,000 in Rancho Cordova—left in the dark due to the sustained winds that also toppled a boat in Carmichael.
Additionally, FOX40 reported nearly 10,000 outages across Sacramento County, pointing out the unplanned interruptions that began just before 10 a.m. Approximately 7,600 of these outages were around Citrus Heights, with another 1,600 in Rancho Cordova. The utility company's website also highlighted the swift action of their crews, with a statement saying, "We are experiencing outages due to weather related conditions—our crews are working safely and quickly to restore power to the scattered outages."
The power failure extended beyond Sacramento County, affecting about 5,000 PG&E customers in Lincoln, Northern California, starting around 6 a.m. As residents wait for the return of power, citizens are encouraged to monitor the status of the outages via SMUD's online platform, ensuring they remain informed as service crews work through the regional disruption.
