A tragic event unfolded in the small town of Pāhala, Hawai‘i, where a single-vehicle collision claimed the life of 13-year-old Kainui Kaupu-Manini. The accident occurred last night and involved a 2006 Honda Civic, as reported by the Hawai‘i Police Department.
According to the Hawai‘i Police Department, the teen driver was heading east on Cane Haul Road around 5:55 p.m. when his car veered off the road, tumbled down an embankment, and made impact with a large tree. The report, which highlights a critical disregard for safety, noted that neither of the vehicle's occupants — a boy just on the cusp of life and a 15-year-old male passenger — were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the devastating incident.
Emergency services rushed Kainui to Ka‘ū Community Hospital immediately following the accident. Despite the efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at 6:33 p.m., a brief 38 minutes post-admission. His companion escaped without physical injury.
The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit has taken charge of an ongoing coroner’s inquest investigation to uncover the circumstances leading to the heartbreaking crash.
