Joining the ranks of the tech elite like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, Dr. Heidy Khlaaf, a product of Paxon School for Advanced Studies and a formidable figure in the AI sphere, has landed on TIME Magazine's 2025 list of the 100 Most Influential People in Artificial Intelligence. The list, published annually, spotlights individuals who have significantly shaped the field of AI, from pioneers pushing the boundaries of innovation to skeptics urging caution in the face of rapid technological change.
Dr. Khlaaf's contribution to the world of artificial intelligence, particularly in the realm of safety and ethical implementation, distinguishes her work. As Chief Scientist at the AI Now Institute, she scrutinizes the integration of AI into critical and defense systems, including nuclear facilities and weaponry. According to the Duval County Public Schools' release, this path to influence was shaped by her educational journey, which began with a "rigorous, well-rounded education" at Paxon. Dr. Khlaaf says that her alma mater was "definitely pivotal to where I am today."
TIME recognized her in the "Thinkers" category, placing Dr. Khlaaf among other influential thinkers like Pope Leo XIV. Despite her critical stance on the use of generative AI in safety-critical systems, Dr. Khlaaf found her perspective validated by the recognition. "It was really surprising, to be honest," she told Duval County Public Schools, noting that she did not expect her critique to garner such acclaim.
Reflecting on her education at Paxon, Dr. Khlaaf credits the breadth of coursework for her multidisciplinary perspective on tech issues. "One of the most invaluable things that Paxon offered me...was the ability to take many classes that spanned multiple disciplines," she shared in an article from Duval County Public Schools. Her appreciation extends beyond just the curriculum; she remains in touch with her AP Art History teacher, Dr. Mai Keisling, whom she considers a major influence and role model.
