In what seems to be a recurring issue, a DUI suspect has been taken into custody following a police chase in Petaluma. Last night, Petaluma Police officers spotted what appeared to be a display of dangerous driving near Petaluma Boulevard North and Skillman Lane. According to a report from the Petaluma Police Department, 21-year-old Petaluma resident Gadiel Cortez-Diaz attempted to, but failed to properly yield to officers, leading them on a short pursuit instead.
The chase ended without incident on Cavanaugh Lane, with Cortez-Diaz pulling over. During the investigation that followed, it was determined that he was under the influence of alcohol, and open containers were also found in his vehicle. Cortez-Diaz was arrested on several charges, including DUI and reckless driving. "The swift actions of officers ensured the safety of the public by preventing the driver from continuing to endanger others on the roadway," the Police Department expressed in their statement.
Fortunately, no injuries or collisions were reported during the chase, which is notable considering the potential for harm in such scenarios. The Petaluma Police Department emphasized the risk that impaired and reckless drivers pose to the community. The officers' quick response likely prevented a more serious outcome.
Stressing the importance of responsible driving, the Petaluma Police Department reminds the public always to designate a sober driver or use alternative transportation methods when alcohol is involved. Cortez-Diaz's case will be forwarded to the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office for review.
