The Philadelphia Welcoming Network, led by the City’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, works to support immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. According to the City of Philadelphia, Alain Joinville, Director of Strategic Communications and Programs, said, "We move at the speed of trust" and "And trust takes time, conversation, and commitment."
The Welcoming Network is structured around three groups: a Steering Committee of community leaders, Action Teams that create and carry out solutions, and a Backbone Team that coordinates their work. Program Manager Zuhail Corro-Vazquez said, "I get to learn from people who are deeply rooted in their communities." First Year VISTA member Haby Sow, who works with the Backbone Team, said, "I like making connections that matter" and "I help turn ideas into action." The Network’s mission focuses on ensuring that all Philadelphia residents feel a sense of belonging, as reported by the City of Philadelphia.
The Welcoming Network in Philadelphia connects newcomers with housing, healthcare, and legal support services. The program offers monthly information sessions and opportunities to join an Action Team through the City of Philadelphia’s website.
