The 14-year-old student was the unintended victim of a fatal shooting that occurred three years ago. According to 6abc, after a junior varsity football scrimmage outside the school, an incident resulted in at least 60 shots being fired, killing Elizalde and injuring four other teens. Authorities have made six arrests in connection with the shooting.
The memorial garden, situated at the site of the devastating event, was unveiled on Friday, replete with native plants and perennials. The plants are intended to bloom annually to symbolize resilience and hope. Meredith Elizalde, Nicolas' mother, who experienced an unimaginably painful moment as she cradled her son in his final moments, has found some solace in the creation of this memorial. "I laid right here with Nic, and I was so blessed to be able to hold him as he exited this world," Meredith told 6abc during the ceremony.
The unveiling ceremony included the display of a No. 62 Elizalde jersey placed under a plaque with the young boy's photo, as documented by CBS Philadelphia. The new security measures at Roxborough High School, which now include 287 cameras and additional safety staff during after-school events, are a direct response to the tragedy that took Nicolas' life.
In addition to the garden, participants at the ceremony also admired a mural commemorating the teen.
