Tragedy struck a Phoenix family earlier this year, leading now to the indictment of Irvin Eduardo Ramos-Jimenez for the death of his young daughter. As per the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, the charges include Child Abuse, a class three felony with the additional designation of a domestic violence offense, and Misconduct Involving Weapons.
In a heart-wrenching incident, Phoenix Police were called swiftly to respond to a scene where a five-year-old girl had been critically injured. The child had suffered a gunshot wound inflicted unintentionally by her nine-year-old sibling. Reports state the minor was able to gain access to an AR-style rifle, which had been recklessly stored in the child's room by their father, Ramos-Jimenez. As the investigation unfolded, Ramos-Jimenez was found to illegally possess the firearm, being a prohibited possessor at the time of the shooting.
While an indictment is not a presumption of guilt, and the defendant has the right to be presumed innocent until proven otherwise, the charges have nonetheless drawn attention to the issues of gun safety and the consequences of firearm negligence. The community and authorities alike are grappling with the preventable nature of this tragedy.
The case is set to go to trial on March 5, 2026, according to the official announcement from Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell.
