The Phoenix Police Department recently divulged details of an officer-involved shooting, cautioning that the accompanying video depicts strong language and graphic content; they advise viewer discretion.
The incident in question took place on September 2, when officers from the Special Assignment Unit were executing a search warrant at an apartment building on West Tonto Street. As they knocked and announced their presence, a forceful entry ensued, and a man inside responded with gunfire, leading to one officer shooting back, leading to the man's injury. Two other individuals were present but left the apartment unharmed and were detained without further incident.
Subsequent to the encounter, the wounded man received medical attention on the scene before being taken to the hospital by the Phoenix Fire Department for his life-threatening injuries, where he remains, pending charges upon his release. Law enforcement located what they believe to be the firearm used by the man during the exchange.
The involved officer, part of the Special Assignment Unit for over 17 years is on administrative duty while investigations by both the Major Incident Division of the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Phoenix Police Department's own internal review are ongoing; these are standard procedures, with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office also set to review the case to ascertain the actions’ justification under departmental policy and legality.
