The Town of Oyster Bay recently commemorated a neighborhood park to Omer Neutra, a Plainview native and fallen American Israeli soldier. According to ABC7NY, the park now serves as a recreational space for families and children and includes new features, such as a basketball court, added in recognition of Neutra’s connection to the sport.
The decision to name the park at Marilyn Boulevard and Phipps Lane in Plainview carries particular significance, as Neutra who was killed during an attack by Hamas in Gaza on October 7, 2023, is remembered for his love of sport and community. The dedication ceremony included prayers from a rabbi and emotional words from Neutra's family, the New York Post reported. During the ceremony, Neutra's mother Orna said, "I want the children to play in this park. To feel what Omer felt. Joy. Adventure. Belonging. A community that wraps around you with love."
Tributes to the fallen soldier extended beyond local residents. Actor Michael Rapaport, present because of his pro-Israel activism, spoke to the crowd, urging the release of Neutra’s body and other hostages held by Hamas. "We cannot, will not, stop fighting, begging, pleading, writing, screaming, yelling, crying until Omer Neutra and the other 47 are returned," Rapaport stated to the New York Post.
At the dedication event, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino highlighted Neutra’s values and described the park as a tribute to his life and service.
