The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has announced an extension of the temporary closure of Port Wonder's Nature & Science Center. Initially planned as a short pause, the closure will now continue through October 6 to allow for the completion of necessary repairs to the aquatic life support system.
The ongoing work primarily involves the Center’s two large aquariums. Staff are in the process of draining the tanks, relocating the fish to alternate exhibits and quarantine areas, and conducting detailed inspections once repairs are completed. Due to the scope of the work, additional time is required before reopening to the public.
While the closure may affect visitors, the LDWF statement confirms that "animal care and safety remain our top priorities." The current work is focused on stabilizing these critical systems and providing the aquatic inhabitants with necessary care during the transition.
For those interested in science and nature without the aquatic element, the Children’s Museum of Southwest Louisiana remains open. It is not impacted by the nearby Center’s closure and continues to operate during regular visiting hours.
Looking ahead, the Nature & Science Center staff will assess conditions at the end of the closure to determine if normal operations can resume. Until then, the Center’s regular schedule of Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., remains suspended, and $6 tickets are not available for purchase in the lobby.
Community members seeking updates on educational programs and sea life are encouraged to follow the Center’s website or Facebook page for the latest information.
