The Portland City Council will return to a weekly meeting schedule under an ordinance unanimously approved today. Championed by Councilors Candace Avalos, Jamie Dunphy, and Sameer Kanal, the new format sets meetings for 9:30 a.m. on the first, second, fourth, and fifth Wednesdays of each month, with a 6:00 p.m. session on the third Wednesday, as reported by the City of Portland. Evening meetings will adjourn by 9:00 p.m., with any unfinished business continued the following Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
Citing the need for more frequent interaction and public engagement, Councilor Candace Avalos highlighted the shift as a strategy to enhance government transparency and response to civic concerns. Running under an “artificial scarcity,” the council previously met on the first and third Wednesday of each month, a schedule born from the city's governance reforms voted in back in 2022. “Moving to weekly council meetings is not just a procedural tweak. It’s about meeting the expectations of the Portlanders who elected us to create a more open, effective, and responsive government that can solve the complex issues we’re facing as a city,” Avalos told the Portland government's official website.
The revision is anticipated to improve legislative productivity and provide a more consistent rhythm for governance. According to the City of Portland, the change to weekly meetings is also meant to lend structure to the Council's endeavors, providing a robust frame for it to deliver on critical city issues. "In just eight months, it’s become clear that Council needs a more regular cadence to do the work Portlanders expect of us," said Dunphy.
Councilor Sameer Kanal pointed out that the meeting schedule overhaul is an intentional response to community needs, granting Portlanders a Council that's more agile and accommodating. Kanal affirmed the collective sentiment, declaring, “Portlanders are getting a more responsive Council that can accomplish more for our communities. With this change, we will be able to increase public input and prevent process from impeding progress," in his statement on the city's website. Since January, under the city’s new form of government, the Council has met on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Before voters approved charter reforms in 2022, meetings were held weekly.
