A fire that broke out in a downtown Los Angeles high-rise on Sunday was swiftly extinguished thanks to quick action by firefighters and the building's sprinkler system. The blaze, which originated from an electric scooter in the hallway of the third floor, occurred at the Rosslyn Lofts at 451 S Main St, a structure with historical significance dating back to 1913.
According to a statement from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the fire was contained by the sprinkler system prior to the arrival of the first responders, who fully extinguished the flames in under 20 minutes. A 68-year-old female resident, caught in the event and aiming to escape the imminent threat of the fire, reportedly leapt from a third-floor fire escape and was transported to a hospital with injuries, including a severe leg injury and minor facial trauma.
The injured woman was taken to the nearest medical facility in fair condition and is expected to make a recovery. As detailed in the LAFD reports, there were no other reported injuries resulting from this incident. The source of the fire was discovered to be an electrical issue related to the scooter, according to CBS News Los Angeles.
While the exact cause of the fire is under investigation, the role of electronic personal transport devices like e-bikes and scooters in domestic fires has been a point of discussion in urban fire safety protocols. The LAFD's prompt action, paired with the built-in sprinkler system, averted what could have been a more substantial disaster, safeguarding the lives and homes of the Rosslyn Lofts' residents as stated on the LAFD's alert.
