In the quiet pre-dawn of a July morning last year, an Albany Police Department officer's routine patrol took a turn when he spotted a group loitering in a closed restaurant's parking lot. His investigation quickly turned up a black rifle in a silver Honda, leading to a repeat felon being sentenced to a 15-year prison term for illegal firearm possession, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Brandon Michael Slachta, 36, was handed down the sentence on Tuesday as part of Operation Take Back America, a federal crackdown aimed at strongly to address illegal immigration, cartels, and violent crime. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Slachta pled guilty in March to possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. U.S. Attorney William R. "Will" Keyes underscored the message, saying, "Armed career felons with violent pasts who persist with criminal activity will face federal prosecution in the Middle District of Georgia."
Slachta's criminal history spans multiple states, including Texas, Florida, and Arizona, and his latest blunder occurred when he attempted to discard the rifle as officers approached. The vehicle's owner consented to the search, leading to the discovery of the firearm and ammunition. In a statement, Albany Police Chief Michael Persley stressed the importance of the collaborative effort, noting, “I am thankful that we have taken another weapon off the streets of Albany, Georgia. Though we don't know the intentions of Slachta, we do know that convicted felons in possession of a firearm can lead to dangerous consequences,” as noted by the same U.S. Attorney's Office.
The collective efforts of local and federal agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), culminated in Slachta's arrest and subsequent sentencing, a result that ATF Acting Assistant Special Agent in Charge Robert Davis described as “Today’s sentencing is a testament to our relentless pursuit of justice. Armed career criminals like Slachta pose a significant threat to our communities, and we will not hesitate to utilize all available resources to ensure they face the full weight of the law,” according to the same press release.
This enforcement is part of a larger federal initiative, Operation Take Back America, aimed at tackling a spectrum of criminal activities threatening community safety. The Assistant U.S. Attorney Sara Lim was responsible for prosecuting the case.
