Retired Charlotte Fire Captain Scott Walker has shifted to a new daily routine after 25 years of service and surviving prostate cancer. Walker was born in Fulton, New York, where he worked construction during cold winters. Seeking steadier work, he moved to Charlotte, inspired by his hometown fire department friends and his brother, a Charlotte police officer. He joined the Charlotte Fire Department in 1997, learning the job on the go.

According to the City of Charlotte release, he advanced from driver to captain at Firehouse 27 and later Firehouse 31, retiring in October 2022. In December 2018, Walker was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent surgery in January 2019. That year also brought additional challenges, including a tricep tear and hip replacement surgery. Throughout his recovery, his wife Leslie and the fire department community provided support.

Since then, Walker has advised other firefighters diagnosed with prostate cancer, sharing his experiences and guidance.

In retirement, Walker focuses on family and leisure activities. He emphasizes the importance of early detection for prostate cancer, urging men in their 40s with a family history to get their PSA levels checked.
