Rowan County drivers, mark your calendars for a minor headache next Monday. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has announced a road closure that may affect your commute. A portion of West C Street will be out of commission from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a storm drain culvert replacement, weather permitting.
Why the inconvenience? Well, the current culvert isn't doing its job of channeling stormwater beneath the roadway properly. According to a release from the NCDOT, this work is being done "to prevent further damage to the road." For travelers accustomed to a smooth passage, the reality is that West C Street's stitches must be undone, or in this case, dug up, before harm befalls the thoroughfare.
The closure will play out near Orchard Avenue and will affect traffic in both directions. Signs will redirect eastbound vehicles via Rainbow Road to Mooresville Road, then Dale Earnhardt Boulevard, and back onto West C Street. For those heading west, the detour will run along Loop Road to Dale Earnhardt Boulevard, onto Mooresville Road, and finally Rainbow Road to rejoin West C Street.
Driving around Rowan County during this time could be a little slower than usual. The NCDOT is suggesting that motorists add some padding to their travel time and follow the posted detour signs closely. After all, winding your way through a detour, shaped with streets unfrequented by your daily routine, could lead up to an unwanted adventure if not for these signs. It's just a one-day affair but it won't hurt to plan ahead.
