A Sacramento man was taken into custody at the Downtown Commons movie theater yesterday after police found him asleep with a loaded firearm in his lap. According to a release from the Sacramento Police Department, officers were called to the venue on 4th Street shortly after midnight upon reports of an unconscious individual. The police were able to safely retrieve the weapon before waking and arresting the man. He was identified as 28-year-old Jonathan Vasquez of Sacramento, as reported by KCRA.

The incident at the movie theater could have easily escalated if not for the swift action of the officers involved. The Sacramento Police Department stated that they arrived to find Vasquez "passed out" and did not delay to securely take possession of the gun. This maneuver arguably prevented a potentially dangerous situation from unfolding. Vasquez, according to FOX40, also had an existing warrant for DUI, adding to the concerns surrounding his gun possession at the time of his arrest.

Vasquez is now facing charges related to the firearm and his outstanding DUI warrant. He was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail following the incident. The Police Department has not released details on why Vasquez was at the theater or how he came to be in possession of the firearm.
