Tragedy struck a Sacramento neighborhood when two vehicles collided at the intersection of 9th Street and T Street, leading to major injuries and one fatality. The Sacramento Police Department reported that their officers had responded to the scene late on Thursday night, August 21, after receiving calls just after 11:50 p.m. Upon arrival, they found both drivers, adult males, needing immediate medical attention.
The investigation, undertaken by the Major Collision Investigations Unit and Crime Scene Investigators, eventually concluded that 33-year-old Richard Newman of Sacramento was the driver responsible for the accident. On August 23, Newman was booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges related to driving under the influence and causing great bodily injury, only to later be additionally booked on vehicular manslaughter. This came after the police were notified that the other driver involved had succumbed to his injuries last Thursday.
Authorities have yet to release the identity of the deceased, pending the notification of next of kin by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office. In the meantime, the police are urging anyone with information to step forward. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the Sacramento dispatch center or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers. They have the option to remain anonymous and may even qualify to receive a reward of up to $1,000.
