The Sacramento community is mourning the loss of Victor Manuel Castaneda, a 21-year-old Sacramento State senior, who was tragically killed in a horrific accident on Interstate 5. Castaneda's pickup truck had become disabled, and was subsequently struck by a tractor-trailer last Saturday, as reported by FOX40. The California Highway Patrol stated that the early morning crash occurred north of Sutterville Road and resulted in all northbound lanes being temporarily shut down.
On his way to work when the fatal incident unfolded, Castaneda experienced vehicle failures that led to his truck losing its tires and becoming disabled, according to the CHP. In a heartbreaking turn of events detailed by a ABC10 report, the semitruck's impact rendered him unconscious, and he was unable to escape the subsequent fire.
Castaneda, who was studying Kinesiology and exploring master's programs, has been remembered by family and friends for his compassionate spirit and affinity for making connections. "He wore his heart on his sleeve, was unapologetically himself, and most importantly loved Jesus," his sister Viviana Castaneda shared in a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses, as reported by ABC10. The fundraiser also highlighted Victor’s ability to befriend anyone and described the profound loss felt by those he left behind.
Officials pronounced Castaneda dead at the scene while the tractor-trailer driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to the CHP.
