San Jose's historic Japantown is facing a significant change as local business owners Jordan and Rina Trigg confront the possibility of closing their establishments. The Triggs have been integral to the community fabric for nearly two decades, consequently, as reported by ABC7 News, the community has rallied in support, with efforts such as fundraising to aid the couple's plight.
JTown Pizza, a neighborhood favorite, has closed its doors indefinitely after six years of operation. Spread and Jack's Bar, alongside 7Bamboo karaoke lounge, are also under threat despite the Triggs' dedicated community engagement and contributions. A Mercury News report detailed their challenges, attributing the crisis to a failed expansion plan, unforeseen historic designation issues, and extensive financial duress.
The Triggs' situation garnered sympathy from former San Jose Councilman Raul Peralez, who initiated a GoFundMe campaign, raising substantial support towards their $75,000 goal. This fundraiser aims to alleviate some financial burdens and possibly prevent the loss of their businesses and homes. Peralez highlighted the family's significant contributions to Japantown and the personal impact their potential loss would have on them, the employees, and the entire neighborhood.
Speaking to Mercury News, Jordan Trigg expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of community support. He confirmed the closure of Spread Deli, emphasizing the struggle to keep their other enterprises afloat, "We still have fight left in us, and we’re still trying to right the ship," Trigg said. However, the outcome remains uncertain as they navigate this challenging period.
