A three-story Victorian building caught fire on the busy streets of San Rafael yesterday afternoon, causing notable disruption but miraculous avoidance of personal injury. Battalion Chief Paul Bernard reported to the scene as the incident commander after the San Rafael Fire Department was dispatched at 3:39 p.m. They managed to contain the blaze within a little over 40 minutes, according to the comprehensive press release provided by the San Rafael Fire Department.
The fire at 1517 Fifth Ave erupted in an apartment building caught mid-renovation and was battled by multiple units and resources from the city and surrounding communities, including Ross Valley Fire Department, Kentfield Fire District, and Central Marin Fire District. Assistance was also provided by city police, the building division, parking services, and PG&E. While the damage estimate is yet to be determined, and the fire cause is still under investigation, crews efficiently prevented the fire from spreading beyond its source.
Firefighters focused on safeguarding the structural integrity of the aging framework and the personal belongings of those residing within.
