A day of recreation turned solemn as search efforts transitioned to recovery at Horsetooth Reservoir. According to Larimer County, on Saturday, a paddleboarder who had been out near Satanka Cove went missing. The individual, who has not yet been identified, was not wearing a personal flotation device at the time of disappearance, raising concerns and urgency in the initial response effort.
Multiple agencies, including Larimer County Parks, Poudre Fire Authority, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and emergency services, as well as Colorado Parks and Wildlife units and the Larimer County Dive Rescue Team, converged on the location, reported Larimer County. Utilizing a combination of drones, boats, and sonar, they scoured the waters where the individual was last seen. Despite these concerted efforts, hopes of a rescue began to wane as hours passed without any sign.
The extensive search ultimately pivoted to a recovery operation on Sunday afternoon. Officials have since closed off Satanka Cove to the public, and a quiet heaviness hangs over the reservoir, a stark contrast to the buzz of first responders' activities. The ongoing recovery efforts signal a bleak turn in what began as a search for a missing loved one, now lost to the depths.
