For the second time in just a few weeks, a Houston Independent School District student was hit by a vehicle near Lamar High School, rekindling concerns over pedestrian safety in the area. The incident occurred Tuesday morning on Eastside Street; the student sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was quickly transported to the hospital, as reported by Click2Houston.
The Houston Police Department is investigating the recent incident involving a silver SUV. The Houston Independent School District (HISD) has emphasized their commitment to student safety, but it’s not clear if the driver was cited. This is the second accident near the high school since the school year began, raising concerns about student safety in this busy area, as per KHOU.
Conversations about traffic safety had already been set into motion after a student was struck by an SUV back in August, prompting Houston Mayor John Whitmire to champion stronger traffic enforcement alongside a new crosswalk to prevent further incidents. In a response obtained by Click2Houston, HISD stated, "The safety of our students is our top priority, and we are mindful of concerns previously raised about traffic conditions near Lamar."
