Early Tuesday morning in Concord, North Carolina, Interstate 85 South experienced significant delays due to a severe crash, resulting in at least one person injured as confirmed by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and reported by WCNC Charlotte. Multiple emergency crews were dispatched to the scene near Exit 55 around 8 a.m., subsequently blocking all four southbound lanes to manage the crash site and commence investigatory procedures into the incident's cause.
The highway patrol disclosed that the collision involved a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle, specifically a Honda Accord, which according to Trooper Efird, had rear-ended the semi at high speed as both slowed for traffic, he told QC News. The force of the impact wedged the sedan beneath the larger vehicle, and the driver of the Honda sustained serious injuries, necessitating an airlift to CMC Main for urgent medical treatment, however, specifics on the driver's current state are yet undisclosed.
During the intervention, traffic was rerouted as a medical helicopter landed on the interstate to transport the injured individual, causing I-85 to close temporarily, this according to a report by Channel 9. And while the interstate was fully reopened by 9:45 a.m., and congestion began to alleviate the Highway Patrol continues to amplify the message for drivers in the area to maintain high levels of alertness and caution while the investigation continues.
With all lanes of traffic now cleared as reported by WCNC Charlotte, normal flow on southbound I-85 has been restored.
