Early this morning, the Attleboro Fire Department responded to a severe multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95, which left one driver with life-threatening injuries and led to a significant highway shutdown. According to Fire Chief Scott T. Lachance, the incident occurred around 1:17 a.m., and response teams were immediately dispatched to the northbound side of the interstate, as reported on the Attleboro Fire Department’s official website.

The crash site presented a chaotic scene with a trail of wreckage stretched over a quarter mile and two heavily damaged vehicles, firefighters used extrication tools to free a male driver who was trapped in one of the vehicles after that he was transported by advanced life support ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital his condition critical, the other vehicle was discovered ablaze under an overpass, its female driver had managed to escape on her own and was later taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital with injuries considered minor. The highway was blocked until about 5 a.m. as the Massachusetts State Police launched an investigation and MassDOT was summoned to evaluate the bridge, which was eventually deemed safe for use.

One of the more complex aspects of the incident was the multitude of bystanders attempting to give aid, some of them rushing into the fray without clear roles or understanding, creating a confusing environment for first responders working to gauge who was in need of assistance and who was there to help, District Chief Mark Renker explained the first moments required careful coordination to establish who was injured among the crowd.

While this major crash demanded the attention of multiple emergency responders, it was not the only call of the night for the Attleboro Fire Department, which reported they responded to an additional nine emergency calls simultaneously it was a busy and taxing night for the emergency services ensuring the safety of the city's residents. The investigation into the exact cause of the crash is ongoing and being conducted by the Massachusetts State Police.
