The City of Shaker Heights is once again in the spotlight for its exceptional financial management. For the fifth year running, the Ohio Auditor of State has bestowed upon the municipality the Ohio Auditor of State Audit Award with Distinction, marking a consistent decade of financial transparency and accountability. The award highlights the city's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) dated December 31, 2024, which passes a rigorous set of criteria to earn this prestigious recognition.
Ohio Auditor of State Keith Faber commended Shaker Heights for its diligence, asserting via the Shaker Heights City News, "By keeping accurate financial records, governing bodies demonstrate their commitment to efficient, effective, and transparent service." Indeed, the criteria for such an award are no small feat. Entities must file timely financial reports through the Hinkle System, sustain a "clean" audit report devoid of any significant findings for recovery, material citations, weaknesses, deficiencies, or questioned costs, and the management letter must be free of significant comments. Shakers' Finance Department, directed by John Potts, has evidently fulfilled these stringent conditions.
A grant of this award does not come lightly—the City of Shaker Heights stands among a limited group of public entities that maintain such a high standard over an extended period. With the tenth honor in twelve years, it's clear that Shaker's commitment to fiscal excellence is not merely an institutional mandate but a sustained practice that has become part of the fabric of the city’s governance.
According to the city's announcement, maintaining a pristine financial report holds deep significance, as it reflects the level of precision and oversight employed by the local government in stewarding taxpayer funds. Finance Director John Potts, who leads Shaker's Finance Department, has been a key figure at the helm of these successful reports. His leadership and the department's attention to detail have consistently placed Shaker Heights at the forefront of financial governance and efficiency, urging other cities to take note and perhaps, even mirror its fiscal attentiveness.
