Residents in Chicago's south suburbs can breathe a bit easier as a morning of high tension was brought to a close with police lifting a shelter-in-place order. The palpable sense of unease began with a police pursuit of several males believed to be involved in an attempted car theft, escalating to a vehicular crash and resulting manhunt for those who fled the scene. FOX 32 Chicago reports a chase followed the attempted theft, with suspects switching vehicles during the escape and ultimately crashing near Vollmer Road and Harlem Avenue.
The aftermath saw individuals dressed in all black, suspected to be armed, scattering on foot, and police rounding up most but not all of those who eluded initial capture. Three suspects were taken into custody, and one person was hospitalized, although it remains unclear if that individual was part of the group or an uninvolved casualty.
The Will County Sheriff's Office swiftly implemented a shelter-in-place order for the vicinity of Harlem Avenue and Vollmer Road, a standard precaution while law enforcement, including officers from Matteson and Tinley Park, scoured the area. Tension in the community was eased when authorities, after an extensive search, lifted the order, announcing an "all clear" signal, as stated in a WGN-TV statement.
Despite some return to normalcy, details surrounding the event, including the identity of the suspects, their intent, and a complete rundown of the morning's events, remain unclear, with the investigation ongoing. Both police departments are working diligently to understand the full scope of this incident, its connections, and the remaining suspect or suspects still at large.
