Shoppers at Mall 205's Dollar Tree were in for an unwelcome surprise when an employee unearthed a skimming device planted on a point-of-sale terminal. This fraudulent gadget was discovered stuck to the card reader of register five, traditionally a bustling checkout spot due to its proximity to the entrance, on the morning of Tuesday, September 23. In a routine that's become all too common, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) stepped in to investigate the digital pickpocketing tool that's designed to stealthily capture unsuspecting customers' card details.
The PPB's East Precinct was alerted early Tuesday, leading to swift action by the officers to secure the device. According to the official Portland Police Bureau's report, the mischievous skimmer latched itself onto the register's card reader at Dollar Tree's 10534 Southeast Washington Street location. The police are now urging individuals who whipped out their credit or debit cards at this Dollar Tree from the morning of Saturday, September 20, until its discovery on Tuesday to check their bank statements for any hint of unauthorized transactions.
The PPB has responded with a call to action for those who patronized the Dollar Tree in question, releasing a statement that they should "closely review their credit or debit card statements for any unauthorized or suspicious activity." Affected parties are encouraged to contact PPB at [email protected] and mention the reference case number 25-262286. Through such vigilance and proactive measures, the bureau thanks the community for its indispensable cooperation, a united front in the ongoing battle against financial crime.
