With the government funding deadline approaching on Tuesday, Speaker Johnson spoke about the effort to prevent a government shutdown. He appeared on CNN’s State of the Union and Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures to discuss the Republican plan and said Democrats were not meeting Republicans halfway on the budget, according to the Speaker of the House.
"It's shameful that they're playing politics with all the services that the American people demand and deserve. They’re going to be stopped," Speaker Johnson said, criticizing Democratic leadership. He cited a $1.5 trillion disagreement and said the GOP is working to prevent a lapse in services, including payment for American troops and the nutritional assistance program for women, infants, and children. He referred to the issue as "partisan demands" and urged his political counterparts to vote to keep the government running, as reported by the Speaker of the House.
Speaker Johnson spoke about the budget impasse, saying it is a choice between healthcare for 'illegal aliens' and the pay and support of American service members and vulnerable populations. On Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, he said, "Think of it, troops won't be paid because Chuck Schumer needs political cover. I mean, it's really that simple and I think everybody is going to see that clearly," mentioning Senator Schumer by name. Congress is working late on the budget, and officials are preparing for a possible government shutdown while negotiations continue, as stated by the Speaker of the House.
