Springfield Township Police Department has a new member on their team, and he's got four legs and an exceptional set of skills. K-9 Officer Rex, a one-year-old Belgian Malinois, was sworn in at a recent Springfield Township Board of Trustees meeting. With endorsements from Trustees Joe DiLauro, Kellie Chapman, and Jeremy Caudill, Rex is now ready to take a bite out of crime alongside his human partner, Officer Jon McKenzie. This duo promises to beef up the law enforcement presence in the community substantially.
Not just any pup, Rex comes to the force with specialized training in people searches to locate missing individuals or suspects on the run, article searches for evidence recovery, and drug detection for narcotics such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl. "Rex becomes our second K-9 officer, joining Sgt. Cody Meade and K-9 Ryker," explained the Springfield Township PD in a social media post. "By working different shifts, these two K-9 teams will provide up to 20 hours of K-9 coverage each day, greatly enhancing protection and response capabilities across the township."
The township's newest K-9 cop isn't only going to be sniffing out trouble; he's also showcasing the community's dedication to supporting law enforcement through fundraising efforts. According to the Springfield Township Police Department's Facebook page, the K-9 program is funded through community donations, with recent proceeds from the Springfield Township Police Department Car Show going towards things like training, equipment, and care for the dogs.
Community generosity doesn't stop at fundraising; critical support also comes from local businesses. Dr. Kelly Willard and the Hudson Veterinary Hospital generously provide vaccines, checks, and necessary medications for the K-9 officers at reduced costs or sometimes even for free. "This extraordinary generosity significantly lowers expenses and helps keep both K-9s healthy and ready for duty," the Springfield Township Police Department noted. Pet Supplies Plus also pitches in to keep Rex and Ryker well-fed. These partnerships not only bolster the program financially but also stress the town's collective commitment to public safety.
As Springfield Township ushers in this new chapter of community policing, K-9 Officer Rex, together with Officer McKenzie, will become a familiar sight. Residents can soon spot Rex's dedicated K-9 cruiser, equipped with specialized transport and safety features, around town. The department and the community are enthusiastic about the enhanced protection and deterrent to crime these K-9 officers bring to the streets. So if you happen to see Officer Rex and Officer McKenzie on patrol, it's a sign of the township's investment in a safer future for all.
