St. Johns County is continuing its Raised Pavement Markers (RPMs) Replacement Program aimed at maintaining roadway visibility. The program focuses on replacing and maintaining raised pavement markers throughout the county to ensure they meet reflectivity standards, particularly for nighttime and adverse weather conditions. According to St. Johns County, they inspect and replace approximately one-quarter of its RPMs annually. This strategy allows the infrastructure to constantly adapt and to quickly provide enhanced safety measures for the drivers. "The raised pavement marking program is developed so that we can ensure all the raised pavement markings throughout the County are meeting minimum standards and reflective to help guide motorists on the roadways, especially in low light conditions and during adverse weather," said Michael Likely, St. Johns County Public Works Project Manager.
The raised pavement markers serve a fundamental aspect of road safety. Yellow markers delineate the centerline of two-lane roads, separating oncoming traffic flows, while white markers are implemented to define lanes of traffic moving in the same direction on multilane roads. These markers are essential in highlighting roadway striping, guiding drivers through curves and turns, and increasing overall visibility.
